For the beginning home video editor, the free video editing programs are an easy and attractive way to start learning the video editing process. All of the programs can do basic editing and some of them are capable of advanced editing. The key to free movie editing software is ease of use. When you are just starting out, you should use the free video editing software that came with your computer until you reach a point where you either need to pay for an upgrade or you feel you need an entirely different platform that is more suited to your editing needs.

Video editing software is a personnel decision that should be based on the amount of editing that you intend to do, your comfort level with video editing software and your budget. For the purposes of this discussion I am not going to suggest which program that you should use. I will discuss the program that I use, but not in an attempt to promote it, but rather to bring up the things that I think editing software should be able to to in the home application. What you choose is up to your own comfort level because editing software is a very personal decision.

Camtasia Studio is one of the most popularly recommended video editing software programs. For what it is, Camtasia is a great program BUT (and this is a very BIG BUT) it is absolutely NOT the right software for most video editing projects. To hear some people recommend it though, you sure would get the impression that it is the be-all and end-all for video editing.
